In honor of Transgender Awareness Week, our youth health center, The Borum, is highlighting some of the challenges faced by trans and gender nonconforming youth.
Though we still need more research to better reflect the diversity of trans youth’s experiences, what we know now clearly points to a need to do more to care for and empower them.

|Spirit Day | October 20, 2011 |
Last year, on October 20, 2010, more than 2 million people around the world wore purple, including celebrities like Ellen Degeneres, Cyndi Lauper, Perez Hilton and the cast of Glee (for more supporters click here). Spirit Day participants banded together to remember teens (such as Tyler Clementi, Asher Brown, Seth Walsh, Justin Aaberg, Raymond Chase and Billy Lucas) who commit suicide after being bullied because of their sexual orientation. We made a huge impact last year, and we’re making progress, but unfortunately it’s not good enough.
Last Sunday, Jamey Rodemeyer, from Buffalo, N.Y., commit suicide. He was only 14. The sad truth is that these sorts of things happen every day. Teens are bullied in their homes, schools and workplaces based on their sexuality and they end up cutting their lives short.
So this year, we’re going to do it again. Wear purple on Thursday, October 20th, 2011. Stand up to homophobic bullying. Support your LGBTQ friends, family members and co-workers. And mourn the lives lost in our battle for equality.

Tracy Morgan threatens to kill his son if gay during homophobic tirade on stage

recycleanimals:

30 Rock star and former SNL alum Tracy Morgan’s June 3rd stand-up routine drove offtrack, and eventually off a cliff when the comedian went on a homophobic tirade while onstage in Nashville, Tennessee. Morgan reportedly attacked President Obama for supporting the LGBT community, called homosexuality a choice, and even threatened to stab his own son to death if he ever came home from school and told his father he was gay.

When the audience began to turn on Morgan, he reportedly remarked that “if gays can take a dick up their ass, they can take a joke.”

Kevin Rogers, who was in the audience, shared his account of the hateful incident with Truth Wins Out.

-Mr. Morgan took it upon himself to mention about how he feels all this gay shit was crazy and that women are a gift from God and that “Born this Way” is bullshit, gay is a choice, and the reason he knows this is exactly because “God don’t make no mistakes” (referring to God not making someone gay cause that would be a mistake).

-He said that there is no way a woman could love and have sexual desire for another woman, that’s just a woman pretending because she hates a fucking man.  He took time to visit the bullshit of this bullying stuff and informed us that the gays needed to quit being pussies and not be whining about something as insignificant as bullying.

-He mentioned that gay was something kids learn from the media and programming, and that bullied kids should just bust some ass and beat those other little fuckers that bully them, not whine about it.  He said if his son that was gay he better come home and talk to him like a man and not [he mimicked a gay, high pitched voice] or he would pull out a knife and stab that little N (one word I refuse to use) to death.

-He mentioned that Barack Obama needed to man up and quit being all down with this just because he has a wife and two daughters.  All of this being followed by thunderous cheer and “You go Tracys”.  Tracy then said he didn’t fucking care if he pissed off some gays, because if they can take a fucking dick up their ass… they can take a fucking joke.

The Times of Harvey Milk

A documentary portrait of San Francisco’s first openly gay politician, city supervisor Harvey Milk, The Times of Harvey Milk might not have been made but for the tragic circumstances of Milk’s death. On November 27, 1978, Dan White, a former city supervisor who was desperate to regain his post, entered City Hall with a gun and murdered both San Francisco’s mayor, George Moscone, and Milk. At the trial, White’s lawyer skillfully turned the jury’s attention away from his client’s public anti-gay statements to focus on White’s spotless record and his extremely agitated mental state on the day of the murders. White was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to a relatively brief jail term, sparking a demonstration and riot by gay supporters of the murdered men. The film considers Milk’s accomplishments and his exceptional popularity; this is not an objective look at a man, but a celebration of a martyr. Winner of an Academy award for Best Documentary Feature, The Times of Harvey Milk was released while White was serving his sentence; he was paroled in 1984 and committed suicide the next year.

Jay McDowell, a high school teacher in Howell, Michigan, was suspended last month for disciplining an anti-gay student. At a recent school board meeting, openly gay 14-year-old Graeme Taylor came to McDowell’s defense with an incredibly articulate/inspiring speech.
